THE LIFESPAN OF BFRP REBAR

Reinforcing steel is a critical component of many construction projects, particularly in reinforced concrete structures such as bridges, tunnels, and high-rise buildings. However, traditional steel reinforcement is susceptible to rust and corrosion over time. This can cause significant damage to the structural integrity of a building and increase the maintenance costs associated with replacing corroded steel reinforcement.

In recent years, Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) rebar has emerged

as a more durable and eco-friendlier alternative to traditional steel

reinforcement. Also, because BFRP reinforcing bars do not rust, they have a

longer life expectancy compared to traditional steel reinforcing bars, which is

why they are ideal for use in construction projects in difficult environments.

Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) rebar is a type of composite material

that has been gaining popularity in the construction industry as a substitute

for traditional steel reinforcement. BFRP rebar is composed of basalt fibers

embedded in a polymer resin matrix, making it a more durable and eco-friendly

material than steel rebar. One of the main concerns regarding BFRP rebar is

its lifespan, which is an essential factor to consider when selecting a material for

a construction project.

BFRP Rebar does not rust, it has the same thermal expansion coefficient as

concrete, it is resistant to water, alkaline, and ultraviolet radiation, therefore it

can have a life expectancy of more than 100 years!

Steel, on the other hand, is prone to rust and corrosion, especially where

moisture is present; it is also prone to cracking due to its different coefficient

of thermal expansion compared to concrete, causing buildings to require

frequent maintenance, so according to general standards, steel has an average lifespan of 35 years.

So, why are we not turning to Basalt Fiber?

Our company, Arab Basalt Fiber Company, encourages policymakers and decision-makers to promote the use of basalt fibers as an alternative to steel rebar that rust.
